He also built a model village for his employees, complete with inexpensive housing, schools, and recreational amenities. He established a plant in Derry Church, Pennsylvania, which he eventually called Hershey. Hershey sold his caramel company for $1 million in 1900 and concentrated on chocolate manufacture.
He returned to Lancaster and continued experimenting with recipes, eventually developing a method for producing economical and tasty milk chocolate. He became enamored with the concept of manufacturing milk chocolate, which at the time was a rare and expensive indulgence.
